Dulwich Homes, Streets and Noise: What We See on Survey
Dulwich has three distinct kinds of housing. Dulwich Village has Georgian and early Victorian houses and cottages along Dulwich Village and College Road, many of them listed, with small-paned sashes and shallow reveals. East Dulwich and Herne Hill are mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces with bay windows, ideal for standard vertical sliders. Around West Dulwich and Sydenham Hill there are large Victorian villas and the 1930s and post-war houses built by the Dulwich Estate, which often have steel or timber casements.
Much of Dulwich is quiet, but some roads are not. The South Circular runs through Dulwich along Thurlow Park Road and the Dulwich Common stretch and is busy day and night. Lordship Lane and Croxted Road carry buses, and homes near Herne Hill, North Dulwich and West Dulwich stations hear Southeastern and Southern trains. For these frontages we use acoustic laminate; homes on the quieter Estate roads usually want secondary glazing for warmth and draughts rather than noise.
