Chelsea Homes, Streets and Noise: What We See on Survey
Chelsea's housing falls into three broad groups, and each needs a different approach. The early Georgian houses of Cheyne Walk, Cheyne Row and the streets around Chelsea Old Church have small-paned sashes with fine glazing bars, often with shallow reveals and working shutters that must still fold back once the secondary glazing is in. The late-Victorian red-brick terraces and mansion blocks around Sloane Square, Cadogan Square and Pont Street have taller sashes and deeper reveals, which give us more room for a wide acoustic air gap. And the studio houses around Tite Street and Glebe Place have large north-facing studio windows that usually need bespoke horizontal sliders or fixed panels.
Noise in Chelsea is concentrated rather than general. Homes on the Embankment take constant traffic on the A3212 as well as river traffic, while the King's Road and Fulham Road bring buses, deliveries and late-evening footfall. Houses towards the western end of the Fulham Road also see crowd noise on Stamford Bridge match days. For these frontages we normally specify 10.8mm acoustic laminate with the widest gap the reveal allows, and standard glass on quieter garden-facing rooms to keep the cost down.
