Islington Homes, Streets and Noise: What We See on Survey
Most of the windows we treat in Islington are early nineteenth-century sashes in flat-fronted brick terraces: the squares of Barnsbury such as Thornhill, Lonsdale and Gibson Squares, Canonbury Square and the long terraces off Liverpool Road. They tend to be six-over-six sashes in shallow reveals, often with original internal shutters. That combination is the main constraint here. The secondary unit has to fit between the sash and the shutter box without stopping the shutters closing, so we survey each opening individually rather than assuming a standard depth.
Further north and east, Highbury and De Beauvoir Town have more mid-Victorian villas and semi-detached houses with taller sashes and canted bays, while Angel and the streets off Essex Road have a large share of houses split into flats. In converted buildings we often treat one flat first and the rest of the building follows, so we keep the frame colour and sightlines consistent across every floor.
Islington's noise comes mainly from its arterial roads. Upper Street, Essex Road, Holloway Road and Caledonian Road carry heavy bus traffic and, on Upper Street in particular, late-night activity from bars and restaurants. Homes near Highbury and Islington station pick up rail and Overground noise, and streets around the Emirates Stadium see crowds on match days. For street-facing bedrooms we usually recommend acoustic laminate in a vertical slider, which keeps the sash usable for summer ventilation.
